Winter sneezes, coughs and colds

Updated: Jan 16, 2023

That time of year

At this time of year it can seem like everyone is coming down with something. Colds and flu are a part of winter ailments and that's OK but sometimes we get stuck after a bout of the flu with symptoms that just won't shift. For example: coughs that keep coming back, feeling run down and tired, not sleeping well, night sweats blocked noses are all symptoms that if they go on for too long can really begin to wear us down and make day to day existence miserable with a feeling of having to drag yourself through each day.

Of course, since the pandemic we are all much more anxious about what would previously have been regarded as a harmless cold and with good reason. Homeopathy can help restore good health and a strong immunity much faster than if we take no particular action.

When you should be concerned

Also, if you are getting repeated infections, one after another, or never quite recovering from the first infection this can be a sign that you have low immunity and in some cases the infection can even go to the lungs leading to Bronchitis or even Pneumonia. When there is fever, achy muscles and joints or night sweats that continue for more than a week. It is always advisable to see your GP if you are worried.

Homeopathic remedies can be of great service at a time like this. Especially when the infection continues or when one feels stuck in a post viral fatigue situation. Feeling rundown, tired and unable to cope with everyday life. Some of the best remedies for these are shown below:-

Cold/Flu remedies

Phos Acidum is a great post viral remedy. The patient feels apathetic and depressed, indifferent to events around them and forgetful. There is usually a craving for fruit, fruit juices and refreshing foods. If there has been diarrhoea or loss of body fluids from the infection, this remedy will act well.

Bryonia The keynote for this remedy is dryness. The patient has dry air passages, (nose and mouth) and has great thirst for large quantities of drink. The cough is dry, hard and painful, sometimes the patient will hold the chest when they cough. Often symptoms generally are worse for moving. For example a headache that is better for keeping still. The patient is grumpy and wants to be left alone. When the cough has gone on for weeks, Bryonia is often the remedy that rectifies.

Pulsatilla Often called for with children, it can help bring down fever, especially when the patient has very little thirst despite having a dry mouth. Children needing this remedy are clingy and weepy. They want to be hugged and comforted. There may be accompanying earache and or conjunctivitis restlessness and sleeplessness. Children needing this remedy often sleep on the abdomen or on the back with arms raised above the head.

This is just a small example of useful homeopathic remedies to get you back on your feet. You can find more information online or by purchasing a good first aid homeopathic book. However, often times home treatment is difficult as it is hard for us to see our own symptoms in an objective way and also knowing exactly how to take the remedies is something that needs studying.
