It began with a Psychotic Episode
I first saw Mary back in the Spring of this year, 2019. She told me that she had been hospitalized with a psychotic episode three months earlier and it had left her feeling deeply depressed and with a feeling that she did not want to live anymore. It all started after a prolonged period of stress which had led to the break up of her marriage. She had then joined a radical political group and the pressures of the group on top of everything else, had led to her break down in mental health.
Mary was given an anti-psychotic drug by her doctor, Asenapine and she was also taking antidepressants and had a prescription for Diazepam, which she could take if things got very bad and she needed something more. Diazepam is a drug aimed at treating anxiety disorders but is also a muscle relaxant.
Despite the medication, Mary was still in a state of high anxiety. When she visited me she was shaking and cold, having trouble talking without crying and wringing her hands. It was awful to see her in such a state, my heart went out to her. I had seen her several years previously as a patient for a more minor ailment and she had been a capable and confident women who was coping well with her busy life as a wife and mother and business women.
She blamed herself for the breakdown and felt a foolish. She felt she had pushed and pushed herself with her business and family life, the relationship with her husband had been abusive, but still she tried to make it work. He had been drinking and abusive with threatening all sorts of things to her and the children. Eventually he left, by which time Mary had grown to hate him. But she still felt that he was there, watching her and waiting to do harm to her or the children. She had the lingering thought that he was watching her all of the time and she was getting dark thoughts that made her feel she would rather be dead than endure this living hell.
Aurum The First Remedy
The first remedy given to Mary was Aurum (potentized gold). This is because it has a strong suicidal state and self loathing state. Although I thought this was probably not the main remedy that she needed, I felt we had to get her into a more balanced and happier place and away from thoughts of death, so I gave this remedy to get her out of danger. Then I would be able to see the case more clearly when I saw her next. However, she called me after two weeks and said that there had been no change, so my prescription had been incorrect. I re-worked the case and sent her Hyoscyamus. This is a remedy for the nervous system and cases of mania.
I've Turned a Corner
When I saw Mary next she said she had turned a corner and was not feeling so depressed as she had been, she was still getting some moments of panic, but the acute anxiety had gone, it was at a much lower level she said. She also still felt nervous and found it hard to get out of bed in the mornings. There had always been a feeling of tiredness which was hard to overcome. Right from the start Mary said that she had to push herself to want to get out of bed in the mornings. Her desire was to lie in bed all day and hide away from the world and sleep, but she would not allow herself to slip in to that state. She had also been able to reduce her antidepressants to a lower dose.
Subsequent Follow Up
Four months later and Mary is now in a much better place. I gave her another dose of Hyoscyamus after the first one and she improved still further. She has also done very well on Lac Humanum and Carcinosin. She has also had Aconite with her at all times to deal with any panic attacks that may arise. Aconite is a great remedy for panic and feeling out of control and can be taken at the time, bringing the person back to a calmer state quickly.
At her most recent appointment, Mary said that she was feeling happy and optimistic. She was still struggling to get up in the morning, but felt it could be to do with her medication. Her psychiatrist had told her she needs to stay on the Asenapine for at least a year.
She has also started up her business again, but has scaled it down so as not to put too much pressure on herself. A very sensible decision I thought and not the actions of a patient suffering from bi polar, as her psychiatrist has suggested. I think the Psychiatrist has never seen a person improve with homeopathy before, and has supposed that she must be bi polar, rather than has simply returned to a more balanced state of being.
Conclusion
What was so gratifying for me was the extreme nature of this case, and how it was possible to re-balance Mary, bringing her back to her old self using homeopathy and despite the fact that she was also taking quite a few drugs at the time, which did not appear to be effective. The homeopathic remedies worked well through the conventional drugs.
