Fear of Flying

"I Hate Failing in Any Way"

Arthur was a man in his late 60s. He was a retired teacher and regarded by many as a pinnacle of success. At the time I met him, he had been working towards getting his pilots licence. He was a sportsman who loved to win and said that he hated to fail at anything he did. As a young man he had been the envy of all his friends as he was always the winner at school sports days. Later in life he ran an adventure school for children. So you get the picture, a man rather like Bear Grylls teaching children how to challenge their weaknesses and develop a more confident self through sports and adventure. He ran this school for 14 years.

However, now he was retired for the last five years and things had taken a bit of a downward turn. He found that he suffered from claustrophobia, which was the main reason he sought help from homeopathy. His son, who lived in Australia had recommended he try homeopathy, and here he was. Arthur wanted to visit his son in Australia, but was unable to get on a plane because of his claustrophobia. He had EMDR (eye movement desensitization therapy) which seemed to help. He and his wife did a trial flight to Europe and he was fine, no panics on the plane and no claustrophobia.

Unfortunately, the therapy did not hold, and on their next trip to Australia all the old symptoms came back. He had a feeling that something awful was going to happen, an ache in his stomach and that strange feeling that his heart would jump into his mouth. They had to cut the trip short and come back home earlier than planned.

In addition to the fear of flying, Arthur had a heart problem, which was under control for the main part. He was due a procedure known as cardiac ablation in a few weeks. This is where the heart is deliberately scarred so as to stop or slow down the electrical impulses which lead to arterial fibrillation (when the heart beats irregularly). He wasn't concerned about this in particular, more interested in getting back to a place where he could fly over to see his son without problems.

Self Loathing

There had also been some relationship changes in Arthur's life and he was having trouble coming to terms with his behavior at that time. He said he was devastated that he had behaved in the way he had, he thought about it a lot and could not forgive himself. He felt that he had been horrendous in the situation.

Gold for the Golden Boy

There is a wonderful homeopathic remedy Aurum, which perfectly fit in with Arthur's condition. It is potentised gold. People needing this remedy are seen as reliable, dependable and usually very successful. It is mostly a remedy for men, but women can benefit from this too. They have very high expectations of themselves and don't allow themselves to fail. They feel a weight of responsibility and think that everything depends on them. So they can't let the side down.

There is a tendency to contemplate suicide too. It can feel like a relief to think of death as it represents an end to the hopelessness and deep dark depression. People needing Aurum can be among the most deeply self loathing of all, disgust with themselves and disgust with life, acute and profound depression can be very much a part of the Aurum picture. Heart conditions can also be a feature.

Beginning to Joke About My Misfortune

When I next saw Arthur, and after his first prescription of Aurum; Arthur said he was feeling better and was even beginning to joke about his misfortune. His GP had reduced the dose of antidepressants he was on, down to 30mg from 40mg. He had started going out more too and away on short trips. Although he felt anxious beforehand, he was able to enjoy it when he go there.

This was not a quick fix, and although Arthur felt the benefits of the homeopathy from the beginning, it took another two years to get him right. At one point he stopped taking the remedy and all his old symptoms and feelings of lack of self worth returned. It was just too soon. No-one needs to take homeopathic remedies forever, unlike conventional pharmaceutical drugs. Once the remedies have worked sufficiently, the body (vital force) can take over and continue without need for more remedies. However, there is no set timetable of how long this will take and in this case Arthur had just stopped the remedy before cure had been reached.

Conclusion

At the finish Arthur was very much back to his old self. And to his surprise his heart condition was also much more under control. He was able to fly to Australia to see his son without any problems and the self loathing was no longer a factor. His wife had noticed a big difference in his behavior and he looked very well, good complexion and robust.
